I'M VERY HAPPY to report that the problem of not being
able to shift through the gears in my '87 VW Quantum
Syncro (same drive train as that is the Audi 4KQ),
following a top end engine rebuilt, HAS BEEN RESOLVED.
Culprit: Stuck clutch disk.
John Larson was right on the money!!!
THANK YOU!!!
Also, many thanks to everyone else who took the time
to provide insight into the problem.
I'm still puzzle, however, by the following, as Huw
pointed out:
"With the engine not turning, the clutch should be
irrelevant to the ability to engage gears. They are
supposed to be <pun> synchronised </pun>, think about
it, it is always pretty easy to run a shift lever
through the gears in a non-running car."
In this case, I was only able to engage 2nd and
reverse with engine not running, none with engine
idling. Again, if I tried to force it into any gear,
with engine running, it would grind and not engage.
Only tried it a couple of times, though, and as soon
as grinding noise kicked in, I stopped forcing shifter
into gear.
Well, what matters now is that is has been resolved :)
-Best Regards,
-Louis

I got my '87 VW Quantum Syncro (same drive
train/tranny as the 4KQ) started last evening after
a top end engine rebuilt, and when I went to put it
into first gear for a test drive, the shifter would
not budge at all!!!"
