5KTQ: R&R fuel pump

Louis,
Just did the one on my '87 5ktq - I've had intermittent "bees in the trunk"
syndrome for the last couple of months and as luck would have it a 200q20v
owner had a new pump for a 10 valve he said wouldn't work on his car....
No special tools needed, but be careful with removing the locking ring on
the top of the fuel tank - the banjo bolt has a tendency to spin the steel
socket in the plastic, there will be liquid gas there after all hoses are
removed (even if you run the gas out of the lines by pulling the fuse on the
running car), and the ring often needs to be "persuaded". use of a
non-sparking brass drift of tools is recommended.
Make darn sure that before everything is pulled out, you make a note of
where the hoses are in relation to the fuel sender float - mine was buggered
up when I got the car, and after numerous sorties into the tank (don't ask),
I still can only get it to read the lower 1/4 of the tank only....or the
upper 3/4 of the tank only. Methinks that the float is hitting the side of
the tank (aka, somebody tried to bend it out of the way when removing the
pump) as the hoses snake around to the left of the sender's position, and
the sender arm is to the right of the sender base. Some day I'll get it
right...I first have to tackle a hot start issue.....
Cheers!
