Good to emphasize that the sender arm, float and rheostat are VERY
delicate (especially after a few decades), and extra care should be taken
when removing and installing the pump assembly. Once the assembly is out
of the tank, you can remove the metal rod, which will separate the
plastic piece that holds the "slider", this will give you an opportunity
to clean up the rheostat board (an ink eraser works well, followed by a
shot or two of electronic parts cleaning spray), the metal arm with the
slider (looks like half a set of points) can be cleaned up too and bent
out a little to improve the contact with the rheostat board. Some of
this may sound as clear as mud, but once you have the sending unit in
your hand you'll see what I'm talking about.
I would also recommend giving the new pump a quick goose with some juice
out of the box to make sure it spins.....nothing worse than buttoning
everything up only to find out that you got a defective pump, BTDT.
