rear windows not working

Sort of- I think the closest parallel is a 3-way light switch.

Yes; the system won't work unless BOTH switches are installed and  
functioning, at least on the type 44.  I can't see any reason Audi  
would have done it differently on the 4000.

I'm not sure- tempted to say they're NOT the same, but if you have  
the parts catalog, see if the front+rear switch part numbers match,  
or pull both and eyeball them closely for part numbers.
