Not correct (darn!) - the 40mm end is male, not a socket. The tool 
engages and fits inside (like a big hex wrench) the strut cap, not over 
it (like a socket would).

I will, however remember this trick for other applications, but it won't 
work here.


I've seen a large monkey wrench used on the caps, but it is awkward and 
leaves scratches and other "footprints" indicative of the presence of 
monkey-lads.

There are enough of these around in the Audi crowd so someone will lend 
or rent you one. Keep asking.
