What keeps Audi out of Formula one?

Its all a marketing thing I suppose.  Right now Audi have committed to 
Sports Car racing and must find the payback sufficient as they continue 
to dominate.

I would have to think the the F1 arena is a tough place to be.  I mean 
how many cars will it really sell and how much would it cost to race 
F1?  Look at Toyota, still floundering after how many years?  I can't 
imagine their return on investment is that great.

Who really knows...
