Somewhat less of a quandary now...88 5ksq Thread

I may have said this before (this thread has gone on a while ...).
But if you're looking for a low-maint value in a very nice larger
sedan, look at the C4 series, the 1992-97 100S and A6 (q).
My experience, and what I've seen of others' says the C4s were fairly
cheap to keep, and can be had for not much money today.
They are very safe (ask me know I know). Rugged. Relatively simple.
For instance, a rebuilt front driveshaft, 3rd party, can be had for
$120. Engines rarely fail if maintained. Trannys are clunky but have
not had many failures. Not enough power to hurt them, from what I can
see.
KBB says a 1995 A6q, 91,000 miles ('typical") with leather has a
private party value of $6900, in excellent condition. It always seems
to be cheaper to buy excellent than to fix them up, as you are finding
out :-)
