You said:  "In the 80s most of the UA was found to be driver error."  I 
think that's "ALL", not "most". 

I've seen a couple of incidents where the cruise control rod has come 
adrift and jammed.  This can be attributed to poor maintenance 
practices, as the  the plastic bushing was completely gone in both 
instances.  I learned very early on in my career as a shop owner to sell 
services rather than "tuneups".  Customers like the feeling of knowing 
their car has had things like that looked after, and I like the feeling 
of phone calls that start with "thank you" rather than "*&%XX##$^". 
Those of us that do our own maintenance should follow that practice.   John
