NAC: Acura Integra questions

The ODB codes require a reader and even if read, here are the outputs:
http://www.troublecodes.net/acura/96-02int.shtml
in other words i think they'd be pointing at the symptoms (eg, "cylinder 1
misfire"), not the problem.
In general, aren't the OBD codes for diagnosing minor performance problems?
In this case we have a cylinder with compression almost zero. He also
mentioned that the problem first occurred after he'd downshifted
accidentally on the highway and the tach shot up into the red. Pending an
OBD readout, anyone care to hazzard guesses as to the likely possible
causes, ie
blown head gasket
intake or exaust valves shot, not seating,
piston rings blown
timing belt slipped

You should start with what OBD codes are set.
