FW: '91 audi 100 automatic tranny gear indicator

I'm holding a 4-spd shifter in my hands now.   There is a sizeable switch 
assembly on the front right corner and it has a fairly large connector. 
Could be a problem with either.  If moving the shifter is not moving the 
switch and it (the switch)was in drive you  wouldn't get neutral safety, 
or a change in the dash display.
