Yes there were 4 cyl models. They were a bit underpowered as you might
guess.

I think there will be a lot of info at their specialized web site, I 
*think* it is at something like synchronized.com, hmmm, which I am 
finding no sign of...

Here is some random stuff...

The Synchro is AWD with 5 cylinder engines, drivetrain is the same as 
84-87 4000 quattro.  Engine compartment layout  is different though. 
Body and interior parts are also unique.

The Synchro is a VW Quantum with AWD, as noted above.  Some Quantums 
(Quanta?) are 2wd with the 5 cyl. engine.  I don't know if there were 4 
cyl. versions.

So... the Synchro is a cool car, but it's interior appointments and 
features are definitely "below" the standard usually seen in a 4kq.

Wikipedia is weak on information about this car - a few tiny mentios are 
buried in the VW Type 2 page, and the Passat page.  Also, the info I am 
relating is fairly US-specific.

What year and country is your prospective purchase from?  Details, etc.?
