I may be an idiot, but to steal a line from Jackson
Browne, now..."I'm gonna be a happy idiot".!
Thanks to all who talked me thru my (self created) no
start trauma. The solution was simple; altho I had
corrected my clockwise (correct) versus
counterclockwise (bad) firing order gaff, I also had
buggered the position of the No.1 plug wire. Lesson
here - do not work on your car during the summer in
the sun without a hat. What was I thinking?
So....I pulled all the plugs to clean them - they were
black but cleaned up easily to like-new. I squirted a
bit of oil into each cylinder to replace oil lost from
the cylinder walls via the flooding I was having.
Changed the oil to remove the (probable) gas
contaminated oil. Set the camshaft gear mark to the
No. 1 TDC position and checked the rotor position. It
was pointing to the No. 4 plug - it was off by 2
cylinders.
Rearrangned the plug wires, turned the ignition, and
the motor started instantly! Woooo Hooooo.
The lifters were clacking like crazy but I was a happy
idiot! The car has been running now for about an
hour, lifter noise is gone. I run it around the block
every fifteen mins or so. New issue....holy s***t
it's slow!
I have been badly spoiled by my B5 S4 daily driver -
the 90q remains a smooth, tight, but bog slow car. OK
though, our 16 yr old son will be using it as his
daily driver to school and work!
Again, thanks to all. This list is the best. I'm
sure you will all be helping me fix my next
miscreation. Have an '84 4kq next on the project
list...haven't started it in 5 years......wonder what
I can screw up next.......
Regards,
Bob Gregory
