Timing belt ?

No, I've never heard the valves bending. I worked at a shop, and never had a
customer say they heard it either. As the sound of combustion explosion is
pretty loud, and you barely hear it, I doubt you would hear this sound. And,
it happens nearly instantly. Even at 600 RPM that's 100 revolutions per
second. Pretty quick, if you ask me. They only bend once, the first time
there is interferance. After that, it's a "free-wheeling" engine :(

I've seen a couple of cars jump a tooth or two and loose power, only to have
run for a while afterwards. In the most extreme case, the customer said it
was like that for about six months.

BTW, this being a 200, I'd check the valve timing pretty soon. If it did
slip, it may be close to the end. The turbo's are interferance engines.
