Timing belt ?

I have had it happen to me on the track and you could hear the valve getting
smacked.  The piston really lost the battle however and ended up looking
like someone put it through a shredder. Not that the valve was any great
shakes.

Remember that once the valve is broken off there is a pretty free space for
the sound to travel into the valve cover and exhaust.  If the intake valve
broke you would be able to hear it from the intake.
