Timing belt ?

Huw,
That one's easy!  A fully charged battery should be approx. 12.5 volts.  The
alternator should be putting out approx. 14 volts.  Then add in resistance
of corroded wiring... let alone a potentially weak battey, old ignition
copmponents, etc.  Shed the electrical load and you *should* be able to
drive for a while... but the sparks will get less and less powerful changing
the fuel/air ratio, changing power output.
