Today, I took apart a used blower motor to see if the motor could be R&R'd.
Both front and rear bearings are bushing bearings in a "float" housing.
The armature copper commutator is worn down quite a lot.
I mounted the commutator shaft in my drill press and used a fine file to
"turn" the copper on the commutator.
That worked pretty well. Did not take too long to do the job.
But, by the time I got down to clean copper, there wasnt much copper left on
the commutator. The original brush wear is almost down to the plastic bobbin
around which the copper commutator is built.
Conclusion: When the brushes are worn out, so is the commutator. There is
nothing to salvage. You have to bite the bullet and buy a new blower motor.
I suppose one could file down new brushes to fit the wear groove in the
commutator, and that would extend the life of the motor. But, there is too
much work involved to gain maybe another year on the motor.
I took some pix of the commutator using my web cam.
