Yes. I've been running a cgt for decades without one, and my '89 90Q
for years.
You can then remove the compressor to save weight (replace bracket &
bolts though or oil might leak) and the condenser for better
radiator/alternator access. (if there is any refrigerant left in the
system, don't vent to atmosphere, have it removed for recycling)

"That's how CIS works", although on some cars the air box/filter is
located remotely from the updraft plate that regulates the fuel supply.
It surely is a bear to change on the type 89. Just enjoy how easy the
spark plugs are to change while you fighting it.
