Engine Noise

Stuck tappets (lifters). Very common on these I5s. Mine souned like a diesel
truck when I got it. First step is making sure you use the RIGHT oil and
filter. 20w50 oil, and I recomend a semi-synth or a full synth. And make
sure the filter has both an anti-drainback valve and a pressure relief valve
(think Mann or Mahle or K&N Gold). If they still tick after that, you can
either replace them, or slowly clean the gunk that makes them stick. If you
want to clean them, its a fairly long but low effort process. A few hundred
miles before an oil change, put some MMO (Marvelous Mystery Oil) into the
engine oil. How much? You want to put in as much as it takes to slightly
overfill (within reason) but dont go more than 1/2 quart above the full line
on the dipstick. For me, that usually meant somewhere between 1/2 to as much
as 1 quart. Drive like normal for a couple hundred miles, then do a regualar
oil change with the material mentioned above. The ticking will get a little
better with each treatment and eventually may get to where it should be
(ticks for less than 30 seconds on a cold start). It took my car about a
year of this treatment for it to totally go away, now she ticks for about 10
seconds at cold start, and not at all on hot start, and I do the MMO
treatment 2-3 times a year as maintenance.
