See? The reason I said "sometimes" is that it would seem the person who
posted the "no purge valve" comment has one without one; also, I have
seen cgt radiators, which are the same, without them.

I didn't know there were crappy ones... I just get mine from Atalantic
Imported, probably some OEM brand for $10 or so.
There may be other factors in thermostat failure, like sludge goop in
the cooling system gumming them up.
While flushing and replacing the coolant (and thermostat, etc.) can be a
leisurely summer afternoon project, it is this time of year (northern
hemisphere bias showing...) that we discover they need replacing, which
takes all the fun out of it.
It's also battery (and alternator/starter) season.
