The nipples on the reservoir have or should have a steel inner sleeve  
so you shouldn't have to worry about  crushing it. I say should have  
because I have seen an instance where the steel sleeve was working  
it's way out of the nipple. It's not bonded in place, just a knurled  
portion on the OD of the steel sleeve to provide a friction lock.

I have also noticed that the hydraulic hoses take a set and harden  
over time so that they don't seal well at the nipple. I just cut a  
quarter inch or so off the end of the hose and slide it further onto  
the nipple so that the raised bead on the end is sitting in an area  
of the hose that isn't stretched out. Seems to work well.
