All our Audis are from Europe - Germany, specifically... but that's not
what you mean... If it was built and sold in Europe, someone had to
swap a lot of parts to make it look like a US car - headlights, bumpers,
speedo (km/h vs. mph). And the VIN will have "ZZZ" in position 4-6 or
so. The VIN plate on the dash, I mean, not the firewall. Those all
have the Z's.

> Vin shows "1984"

Typical - MY starts in about September, I think.

Could come from anywhere.

Correct for that car, the transition to the JT hydraulic lifter engine
occurs somewhere in MY 84.

> Left Rear Badge states "Audi"

That's a good sign.

> Right Rear Badge states "Fuel Injection"

Very hip for 1984. Pretty much a given these days.

Look at the VIN - somewhere in the middle it will either say "81" or
"85". That is the platform type.

As far as I know, the "E" designation usually went with the taller gear
ratios - which were phased out in MY 84. In fact, probably used up like
the WE engines with CIS (non-E). Is your transmission the QF? The
replacement lower geared (same as later cars) tranny was also a cable
clutch unit. I suspect that the "E" in your case pretty much relates to
the tall gears. One way to tell is you can go about 80 mph at under 3k
rpm in 5th. And 3rd gets you out to almost 90 mph before red line.
