my guess is that the d-type wouldn't exist without "someone" trying to 
use technology to prove a point about racial superiority.
and without spending all that money attempting to make that point, there 
wouldn't have been a technological or political reason for the russians 
to steal that technology for reverse engineering purposes.
hence that car would not otherwise be for sale today unless the climate 
existed at the time for such things to occur as they did.
i think the commentary is necessary to the story since my first question 
was "who would sell this car and why?"
