The V6 is a hardy engine, and the ones I service here at the shop seem 
virtually trouble free.  I ALWAYS change the thermostat with the pump 
and timing belt and tensioners/idlers.  The first one we did, we did as 
a stand alone job.  Difficult, but not impossible.  We went in less than 
a month later and replaced the pump and belt.  The pump was seizing 
randomly, making a high pitched squeal (the timing belt dragging across 
the stopped pulley) and causing an overheating condition.  I suggest you 
do the serpentine belt and it's tensioner at the dame time.  You WILL 
need the timing belt tools to do the job properly.  Helps to have a 
Bentley, too.  John
