Ignition key doesn't spring back after starting ....

This is your '95 A6, right? You don't have to take the dash off. I
believe it can be done by just pulling the cluster. The cluster can be
pulled after removing about 4 screws _without_ removing the steering
wheel. :-) It is a tight squeeze, but it can be done. The key return
spring is in the electrical portion of the switch. From your email, it
isn't clear if you replaced the electrical or mechanical portion of the
switch.
