I'd go with the Tip.  If you commute in any kind of
traffic, a stick gets old real fast. And as you said,
resale of the Tip will be better. As for reliablity
-- it's a new car, it should come with a warrantee;
let VAG worry about it.  If anecdotes on the list are
an indicator, and you plan to keep it for a long time,
I'd change the transmission fluid every year or two.
