Ben thanks for the response..
on the rearward engine bit, the SA vanagons ran the 5cyl NA engines 2.3 & 2.5s i think.
no need to rotate backwards, the input is in the same rotational direction.
on the fit, the 5cyl is tall, a 2WD needs a decklid extension, a syncro can have it's engine mounts lowered some and fits, but lose a little ground clearance.
I plan on a mix of the 2.. max ground clearance min invasion in interior panels.
I've found a few good websites for 10vt to 4000 swaps.
and thanks for the donor DS headlight. I'll get some $$ to you shortly. to cover time and effort..
I'm sticking with my 5000 2wd light for now, the Turbo one developed a lot more broken pieces in the postal truck.

The computer functions are totally auxiliary to the engine operation. You
would need to install these as an entirely separate subset of wiring, etc.
or not at all.
Fuel pump cutout related to boost pressure is handled within the ECU. - a
wire (pin 21 - See pinout) controls the fuel pump relay.
I may be mistaken, but you may need to install and rework the engine in the
vanagon syncro so it runs backwards( cam, crank seals) - I'm not sure. You
might want to do some searches on this. It may be the transmission handles
this.
Anyway, other than that, the engine management system can be made to run
standalone as long as you have the Idle stabilizer control unit as well as
the ECU, proper fuel pump relay setup, and of course 12V positive and
ground connections.
