It is a simple switch, that is "open" whenever the throttle is off idle, 
and is "closed" when you take your foot off the gas pedal.

Yes, it is.  Could the vac advance can itself have been the leak?  You 
can get a new one for about $30, as I recall.  Or if your hose is old 
and tired, the end may be flared a bit and hardened.  Could try cutting 
a bit off.
