can't get engine lid to open - '88 80Q

More than likely the little clip on the end of the cable has come
loose and perhaps fallen off.

It is possible (quite difficult but possible) to reach up from
underneath the car to operate the latch mechanism by hand. More
likely than not there will be a concomitant shedding of sacrificial
blood to the Audi gods. It took me only about two hours of effort
mostly spent seeking a route for my arm to reach up through the quite
tight engine compartment. Suggestion - your bare arm and hand will
probably be the best tool to use.

Others will tell you that it's possible to poke a screwdriver in from
the front of the car to operate the lever. Not IME.
