Turn Signal Stick

Hello all!

I have a 1986 Audi Quattro, sometimes I have to pull back the turn signal stick a bit and let go very slowly in the 'high beam off' position so that the high beam stays turned off, turn signal stick seems to have a mushy back and forth feel in the 'high beam off' position.  Pushing turn signal stick into 'high beam on' position will turn on high beam. Turn signals work OK. what could problem be? I had once removed stalk section in front of steering wheel when changing bulb in speedometer housing.
