They used to be exclusively high end in the 80's, but has gradually 
introduced lower and lower end products.  (I think this started when JL 
Audio subs and MB Quart speakers started kicking their butt in sound 
competitions.)  I believe you can get the head units at Best Buy, I know 
you used to be able to get them at Crutchfield.  Speakers definitely 
available at both of the above sources.  Some head units were moderately 
expensive, but all under $500, and this was several years ago.
