I've owned a 200 turbo and 3 C4 avants, one an S6.
I'd get a V6 engined wagon. In my experience, the C4 A6 cars are the most
reliable of the older Audis (and more reliable than the C5 Audis!) While all
of the engines are bulletproof, it's the accessory systems, particularly on
the turbos, that give problems at advanced age.
Also, the C4 will be a much more comfortable and roomier car (bigger, more
usable wagon area) for the dogs.
Look at '93-'98 wagons. You'll find them ranging in price from $3K to about
$8K, and pick one that's been well kept by a previous owner. Mileage not
critical.
