Leave the old, dead VR on there and in place,it is doing no good, but also no harm at this pint. Then use an external one after the output. This is how many (most) alternators/generators on boats are setup. When the VR died on both my Impala and my CGT, that's what I did. Of course I did use a marine grade external unit because I got huge discounts through my local marine chandlrey. Both are working perfectly multiple years later. Interestgly enough, I believe both the Impala and CGT use Bosch alternators...
