 From what I remember (I did this a couple of months ago) even if you 
loosen the two screws in the face of the speedo (which you have to do) the 
speedo needle will keep you from getting to the gears.  I had a spare 
instrument cluster to play with, one needle came off easily, and the other 
one didn't.  If you aren't comfortable doing it, I suggest letting a pro do 
it.

It isn't completely different from the 80/90 (the center section containing 
the speedo/tach/etc, appears the same to me, I've had both apart,) it is 
different from the 4000/early Coupe.
