If you can get the belt most of the way on and just the top 10-12 o'clock 
amount still not going over, then try tor crank the engine so the belt is 
puled up and over.  I have done this regularly on a tight fit.  I have found 
on both the 5kt and 4kq sometimes even the correct belt need this type of 
coersion.

 From what I can see, the alternator is as far to the right as it can
go. Unless I can come up with any more ideas, I'm about ready to admit
defeat. Fortunately there's an Audi shop, recommended by a local
lister, that I think I can get to on the battery.]
