putting a auto trans in a '91 20VTQA

Another option might be seeking out a '92+ model year automatic Avant and 
doing an engine swap.  I would think that approach might prove easier.  In 
this scenario you've immediately improved your chances for finding the right 
car since you've already stated you "have no need for the Quattro system."
