No, the Mitsubishi platform used on the original Volvo S40 is nowhere near
as good as the Mazda 3/ Euro Focus platform. The US Ford Focus is still on
the old Focus platform, which is not the same as the Mazda 3 and current S40
platform.

The 1.9L engine is also mitsubishi derived, is it not?

The current S40 and Mazda 3 are very nice, IMHO.
