I drove a rented V40 a few years back in Europe, the Mitsu-based platform,
non-turbo gas direct inj. engine (sounded like Diesel), 5-sp.  It had plenty
of luggage room and that's about it.  Fun to drive is a bit too strong an
expression, it did reach 190 km/h on the crouded and somewhat bumpy autobahn
in West Germany, later discovered that the hood latch had popped from fully
locked to the semi-locked position - scary prospect.  Never dreamed of
buying one afterwords.  But in N America they came with a turbo and auto -
fits the bill for that conversion goal.
