On that subject, what year did Audi start using clearcoat?

I had to use some lacquer thinner on my 87 CGT to remove some very stubborn
adhesive, right atop a chip in the paint. I was literally checking the rag
one (gentle) stroke at a time to make sure it wasn't attacking anything, and
got it all off without bringing up any pigment.

I got in really close with plenty of bright light, but couldn't actually see
evidence of clear coat. I thought the thinners might get under edge of the
clearcoat layer at the chip, but after all was said and done I could find no
such transparent edge or see the layer. I had always assumed there was
clear on the car from the factory based on list posts...dat so?

On a completely unimportant aside, I prefer the real thing. Good old
lacquer has more depth and a much less superficial luster and the shiny
layer doesn't peel off :).
