As to zeners, for a 4.3v model, you will probably need to mail order
from a major place like Newark Electronics, Chris Electronics or one of
several other large supply houses.
Next, they are very directional. A zener is a diode, actually made from
TWO diodes, that has a predictable breakdown voltage in the reverse
direction. So it acts like an infinite resistor up to 4.3 volts, and
then has no resistance. in theory. Int he old standby water flowing
analogy, its like a dam. Keeps water back up to a certain level, then
lets it flow over. What you are making is most likely a regulator or a
voltage reference, or both.
Zeners have a dark band on one end. That corresponds to the end that
the triangle/arrow points TOWARD on the circuit diagram that (I hope )
you have. It connects to "+".
