And a third consideration - wear patterns.  With low pressures the 
tires tend to wear more at the edges.  With higher pressure the wear 
moves toward the center of the tire.  Optimal pressure will produce 
even wear across the tread pattern.  This pressure is usually, at 
least in my cars, not far below the maximum rated pressure as 
indicated on the sidewall.
