I had the EXACT same problem with my '86 4000 (now sold). The car would run
great, but suddenly stall. I'd let it sit and then it would run well again.
The big clue was that when searching the archives of the list, I noticed a
post that mentioned a buzzing relay from the rear of the car that was a big
indicator that the fuel pump was on its way out.

I had the buzz, and it was the fuel pump.
