Except that the max rating on the tire is clearly defined as max cold
pressure.

Before Brett Chimes in, you'll get expansion of air as the tire temps
increase going down the road.
You need a tire pressure gauge (DIAL) and possibly a cheap compressor gizmo
from the auto parts store 12v for your cig lighter.
While the below is a good ballpark idea, I'd check what your specific tire
increases to by driving 20 minutes on the interstate then pulling into a
rest area to quickly check your tires with a gauge to compare cold and HOT
pressures to make sure your under the MAX rating of the tire. Obviously
this should be done at freeway speeds of 65 MPH or so, not crawling along in
commuter stop and go traffic.
Also, one person vs a fully loaded car is going to make a difference too.

Just aired up a set for one of my v8's. They are one size larger than stock
at 225/60-15 and the tires Dunlop SP5000 tends to have a somewhat soft
sidewall. Car's recommended pressure is 36, tire's max is 51. I inflated
them to 40 with fuel economy in mind.
