[urq] German word wins US Spelling Bee?

I think it's pretty wrong that the poor Canadian girl got the word wrong,
since IIRC the only thing she did wrong in the word was use a "V" instead of
"W" for Weltschmerz. The contest is open to English speaking populations
only, so therefore shouldn't the words be English and even if they aren't
shouldn't they be pronounced in English? The guy reading the words
pronounced the word the German way using the English "V" sound, which is
wrong in an English contest IM-not-so-HO.
Am I wrong?
