That's what's called for in the B5 S4 procedure, same engine, I would think it's relatively the same process.. I imagine shortly there after on the list of steps is the removal of downpipes and turbos..

Good Luck

Subject: A6 2.7t Cylinder Head Rebuild

Fellow Audifans,
I need to rebuild the cylinder head on my father's '00
A6 2.7t. It has bad compression on cylinder #1. I
need to remove the right head. The first step in the
manual is to remove the engine. Is this really
required? Anyone ever remove the heads without
removing the engine? Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.
