Louis,
As others have said, the wreck was a navigation hazard, and there's big $ to 
be made from scrapping ships (especially in-situ).  It doesn't seem to make 
sense, but of the three major ship breaking yards in the world, one in Port 
Colborne, Ontario, second in Brownsville, Texas, and the third in Alang, 
India, where do you think two Canada Steamship Lines ships (auctioned on 
Lake Ontario) ended up being towed to and cut up for scrap?
Hint: 21deg 24' 02"N and 72deg 11' 29"E on Google Earth (spot the aircraft 
carrier)
