I think so, yes - a good used half shaft is probably what you want.

Yes, you might not even need to undo the ball joint - with the nut off, 
hard turning of the wheel might allow the splines on the outer CV to 
slip out of the hub.

To undo the nut, leave the car on the ground and use a big cheater bar, 
  use a new locknut upon reassembly, and likewise, finish torquing it on 
the ground.
