On the subject of competent, independent mechanics:

I'll give at least a provisional recommendation to Paul's Automotive Machine
on DuPaul Street in Southbridge, MA. He is not an Audi specialist, but his
machine shop was extraordinarily well-equipped when I visited there to
inquire about my rear trapezoidal arm bushings, and I spoke to Paul
himself. The place was busy and gave me the right "feel" if people who have
visited machine shops know what I'm talking about. Very cordial, and he
told me that he has been in business more than 30 years and seemed like a
genuinely knowledgeable fellow, an "old-hand" mechanic. He assured me that
he could remove my old bushings and get the new ones in on a per-hour
basis.

The only reason that I didn't take the arms to him was that ten minutes
later I learned by cellphone that my father had already inquired and
promised the job to our local mechanic, Robert, who runs a comprehensive
repair shop out of his CITGO gas station in Holland. He does a lot of local
business, including at least two late-model Audis recently, although for
what precise services I don't know. Robert's Auto Clinic & Tire is the
official name of that shop and Robert himself owns a very nice BMW 525i. He
did the trap. arm bushing removal/install for me and his workmanship was
excellent. The price for both sides, including the front mounts, 6
bushings in total, was $100. I was very pleased.

While neither of these folks are self-described Audi specialists, I would
feel comfortable as a knowledgeable owner taking my car to them for all but
the most esoteric service, especially since both gentlmen are responsive to
the customer's concerns..
