Hi Al, could you please elaborate on that, in
particular on the compression ratio?

Similar to Dave’s car, I had a heater core hose burst
on my VW Q Syncro, and although I did pull off to the
side of the highway when I saw temp gauge rise and
water vapors come out of the car, the car needed the
head to be milled to flatness.

In the case of my car, I was able to even start the
car after the incident, but pressure built up quite a
bit after 10 minutes of running idle and the water
mixed with oil.

The machine shop charged me $394 to have the head
milled flat. That included a 3* angle valve job and
the replacement of 2 or 3 valve guides, I think. Add
to that new seals including head gasket, EM, IM,
injector O-rings and seats and others and the price
could rise to about $700. That does not include labor
time of course.

So, as Peter points out, getting a known good used
engine might be a more economical choice.
