re. Gasket sealant?

Dennis,

I'm fairly religious about using the Permatex liquid gasket sealant - small
can with brush, gooey black stuff. It was originally sold as "Aviation/Marine
gasket sealant" and Permatex now sells it, available everywhere. I almost
never have leaks and then only if the surface was compromised. I have been
using for years on all Audi, VW and Chevy smallblock Marine/performance
engines, among others. It also is good for re-using cleaned up O-ring and
compression fittings when new parts are not readily available.

For sealing threaded compression fittings/unions, etc. I find (after cleaning)
the copper anti-seize is good to keep them ready for service should you need
to revisit the job in a year or two. Examples of this are fuel injector
unions, line swivels, and brake lines.

Of course blue lick-tite on threaded fasteners that don't get too hot, and
red-locktite on manifold and exhaust fasteners. For the flange gaskets, I
usually apply the High-Temp Red-RTV form-a-gasket sealant. I vulcanizes at
room-temp, yet remains rubbery at extreme temps and won't blow out. Never
have exhaust leaks with the stuff.

I have used and seen used blue or black form-a-gasket sealant and/or RTV
sealants on valve cover gaskets. I find however, if the surface is good, the
permatex liquid works better and is easier to clean-up and redo if the cover
is pulled later. Then you just brush on some more and bolt down again. No XS
to clean up. Sometimes, I need to use the blue RTV around the front cam seal
area, but rarely and the two RTV and Permatex goo can co-exist.

What is the collective list wisdom and consensus on using gasket sealants when
assembling an engine?

This is directed to a WX 10V, mainly concerning oil pan, and the front and
rear main seal carriers.

Use it (and which one/what type) or let the gaskets do their job solo?

I am sick and tired of a messy engine bay, and now that it's out and getting
cleaned up I would like it to stay that way! At least for a while.
