Coolant hoses - ever had one fail?

Yeah- the hose developed two slit-like leaks.  It started slow and  
then bled out a quart or so over the course of a few hours in a  
parking lot.  Yuck.

The hose I replaced looked like it was very different in construction  
from most other hoses on the car- like fuel line or what I put on  
(oil cooler line.)  Silicone line would probably last the life of the  
car, but I wasn't patient enough to wait for the line to come in via  
McMaster.

For future reference, it is basically 3/8ths reinforced line, or 10MM  
ID, 20MM OD.
